- Plant in full sun.
- Aronia will tolerate a wide range of soil pH but the optimum level is 6-6.5.
- Shaping young plants will encourage branching. This is done after berries have dropped.
- After establishment, in late winter or early spring before growth starts, prune the oldest stems to the ground.
- Restrict bush height & increase bushiness by cutting back upright stems.
- As the plants mature, prune to thin the plant so all parts can receive air and sunlight.
- Fertilize minimally.
You can expect Viking and Nero aronia variety shrubs to produce about two pounds of berries per bush two years after planting. Production levels off at around 20 lbs per plant by the 4th year after planting.
Aronia berries top the list of more than 100 foods that have been scientifically tested for antioxidant capacity.
